The Dillards will be performing at The Grey Eagle on Monday, March 25th for An Evening with the Dillards. Busker Broadcast host Abby the Spoon Lady was lucky enough to grab a few minutes to chat with the legendary Rodney Dillard himself.
Rolling Stone Magazine recently named Rodney Dillard The Father of Country Rock, and many will recognize Dillard from his iconic role portraying one of “The Darlings” on The Andy Griffith Show – a series that still graces television sets 50-years later due to syndication. Dillard also appeared in The Judy Garland Show, The Johnny Cash Show, and Austin City Limits.
“We played that family of hillbillies who came in out of the mountains and gave Andy a hard time,” says Dillard of his time on The Andy Griffith Show. “It’s never been off the air in fifty-some-odd years. It’s sure a tribute to people who enjoy that kind of a show and like the family values that that show represented.”
Dillard explains that balancing his role on television, with his musical career was almost like living a double life, but that the credibility the show afforded him opened some doors. “That was the petri dish of new and creative music back in the sixties. So, us having been on The Andy Griffith Show, and some other shows, gave us an opportunity to play for folks who normally would never hear that music.”
Dillard is looking forward to connecting with his fans at The Grey Eagle on March 25th. “I love Asheville audiences,” says Dillard. “I enjoy that area because there’s a real appreciation, like the Ozarks, for this kind of music.” The Dillards got their start in the Ozarks, before moving to Los Angeles in the early sixties.
“I just want to bring all the music and all the experience I’ve had to that show at The Grey Eagle. I’m just looking forward to doing that,” says Dillard, also throwing in a hint that some good stories may await the audience. “Some people start throwing questions at me about what it was like being on The Andy Griffith Show, and I’ve got some stories.”
The Dillards’ recently wrapped up production on a new album featuring Rodney Dillard along with musical legends Don Henley, Ricky Skaggs, Sam Bush, Bernie Leadon, and many more. Release date to be announced.
