Wow, what a damn month it’s been for sure. I just want to take a moment to talk about the great man we lost last week, Charles Bradley. If you haven’t watched Soul of America, you should really check it out. It tells his amazing story. I met Charles Bradley at FYF fest a couple of years ago. I remember the experience pretty vividly. He asked me my name, and then replied, “Andrew? I love you, Andrew!” He later signed a record for me, again indicating that he loved me. It was a really kind moment shared between strangers. He radiated positivity. I know that social media was a bit flooded with posts about him, but I think it was for a good reason. He was a pretty kind and amazing person. My thoughts go out to him and his friends.
So now that I got that off my chest, enjoy the latest Alpenglow below:
[Fresh]Son Little – New Magic
I was a little skeptical when I saw Son Little at first. It’s a bold statement to wear such a large hat. Was he going for Pharrell? Badu? D’Angelo? Then I heard his album and thought, damn, he can wear that hat. His stuff is groovy and soulful at times, dark and edgy at others. New Magic is more the former, but still has hints of the latter. ‘New Magic’ is out now.
[Worth a Re-Spin]CAYETANA – Nervous Like Me
I was so bummed with all the conflicts at Hopscotch, including this one. I missed out on seeing them because that hour was just so packed with good music. Their new album is fantastic, but if you haven’t been following from the beginning, take a second to dive into their older stuff. This Philly band brings energy and such a nostalgic sound that still sounds fresh and fun. ‘Nervous Like Me’ came out in 2014.
[The Breaks]The JuJu – Exchange
I am so glad I stumbled upon the JuJu Exchange. Headed by Nico Segal, fka Donnie Trumpet, the trumpeter for Chicago Hip Hop collective SaveMoney, which features Vic Mensa and Chance the Rapper. He heads a four-piece jazz ensemble known as TheJuJu. Exchange is a fantastic piece of jazz, feeling like it’s part of the recent resurgence of jazz in the indie music world. I look forward to hearing more! ‘Exchange’ is out now!
[Look Out For]William Eggleston – Musik
How one man could contribute so much to art fascinates me. If you’re aren’t a fan of photography but are a fan of music, you know William Eggleston. From the covers of Jimmy Eat Worlds ‘the Middle,’ to Big Star’s ‘Radio City,’ to Primal Scream’s ‘Give Out But Don’t Give Up,’ to tons more. Now he’s releasing an album of his own called ‘Musik,’ a compilation of improvisations from as early as the 1980s recorded on 49 floppy discs. Musik comes out Oct 20th on Secretly Canadian. I can’t wait!
