Top Play Chart commentary, week ending January 27, 2018 (Jan. 21-27)
Alvarius B. is #1 … Alvarius B. is #1
In an alternate universe, Sun City Girls member ALVARIUS B.’s With a Beaker on the Burner and an Otter in the Oven is the #1 record in the land. Well, that alternate universe is Asheville, North Carolina, where ALVARIUS B.’s With a Beaker on the Burner and an Otter in the Oven album is #1 on BOTH the main TOP 30 Play Chart and EXPERIMENTAL Chart as Asheville FM deejays dig through 35 songs on this double/triple album (filed in Experimental).
TUNE-YARDS _ I Can Feel You Creep Into My Private Life (4AD), their 4th album since 2008, wasted no time vaulting to the #2 spot in its first week on the Electronic shelf as Merrill Garbus guides Tune-Yards into dance land. Tune-Yards plays May 5 @ The Orange Peel.
FIRE! _ The Hands (Rune Gramvofon) by Swedish free jazz psych rock noise trio is burning up, debuting at #3, while Camper Van Beethoven spin-off MONKS OF DOOM _ The Brontë Pin (Pitch-a-Tent) debuted #4.
NAKED NAPS _ Year of the Chump (Self Aware) the dynamic indie rock duo from across the way in Raleigh, North Carolina, nests cozily at #5.
At #6, MEN AND VOLTS _ A Giraffe is Listening to the Radio: Men & Volts play Captain Beefheart (Feeding Tube), their first album since 1990 (their 4th overall since 1982), pay tribute to the music of Don Van Vliet and His Magic Band.
From Montreal, Quebec, Canada, #7 ESMERINE _ Mechanics Of Dominion (Constellation) are an experimental chamber rock group with their 6th album since 2003.
The jazzy, groovy African-influenced 3MA _ Anarouz (Six Degrees) explore sound and rhythm to #8.
#9 LEE SCRATCH PERRY AND SUBATOMIC SOUND SYSTEM _ Super Ape Returns To Conquer (Subatomic Sound) basks in the afterglow of the January 19 show at new Asheville music venue Ellington Underground downtown.
THE MACKROSOFT _ The Glass Weed Game (Self-Released) by prolific funky hip-hop soul maestro Aja West out of Seattle rounds out the TOP 10 as it debuted in Asheville FM’s TOP 30 during the week of January 21-27, 2018.
Finally, it is with deep appreciation that we bid a long farewell to venerable Mark E. Smith, astringent frontman and exacting bandleader since 1976 of English post-punk group The Fall from Manchester, England. Smith died last week, Wednesday, January 24, 2018, age 60.
In the time that followed, Asheville FM deejays played over 50 songs by The Fall from at least 28 different releases, so prolific was Smith’s output over the decades, not to mention his stylistic influence on bands to this day. Nineteen of those songs were played on DJ Greg E. Lyon’s The Good The Bad and The Ugly radio show, its 2 hours totally wired by The Fall of Mark E. Smith, riff in peace.
