March 11-17, 2018, Asheville WSFM Top Ten commentary …

.) Superorganism _ Superorganism (Domino) … “After a string of outstanding singles (all included on this LP), this multinational collective of 8 20-somethings have hit it out of the park with their self-titled debut album. Superorganism is a great collection of maximal pop – using frog chirps, baby coos, vegetable crunches, ringtones and toy synths, among other things, to create music that at once hearkens back to the (then) mind-blowing production of the Dust Brothers on both Beck’s Odelay and the Beastie Boys’ Paul’s Boutique. And while the samples are usually used more as instruments, there’s also a strong element of the pastiche pop of The Avalanches. Superorganism lead singer Orono falls somewhere between Kimya Dawson and Stephen Malkmus on the slack scale – which lends an even more hazy and lackadaisical feel. Every single song on here is a winner and will likely go down as one of my personal faves for 2018.” – Jaybird (with Ladybird Juliet: Uncorrected Personality Traits radio show, Mondays, 8-11pm)

.) 26) Elise LeGrow _ Playing Chess (S-Curve) … “Canadian recording artist Elise LeGrow reworks eleven Chess Records classics into bluesy, jazzy, lounge-y, funky covers with some fresh arrangements. Strong, raspy vocals reminiscent of Bettye LaVette at times. Dap King Horns help out on tracks.” _ DJ Joey Books (Life Out of Tunes radio show, Mondays, 2-3pm)

.) Ricky Hell and the Voidboys _ Ricky Hell and the Voidboys (Quality Time/Greenway/Dirty Water) … obviously named in cheeky homage to Richard Hell & The Voidoids _ Ricky and the Voidboys are a newer Cleveland punk trio whose self-titled album harks back to classic Clevo punk as well as some smoother poppier numbers …

.) 4) 21) Ezra Furman _ Transangelic Exodus (Bella Union) … Ezra Furman’s queer rock odyssey remained steadfast in wake of his March 11 show at The Grey Eagle with Detroit tunesmith Anna Burch … DJ Sarah P. recalled that Furman also covered in concert a song by Kate Bush, whom she played on Girls To The Front radio show (Thursdays, 5-7pm)

.) Ralph White & Steve Marsh _ Two Distinguished Gentlemen (Self Sabotage) … “Ex-Bad Livers Ralph White III & Steve Marsh (Evil Triplet / Terminal Mind) hail from Austin. The Fretless Banjo, Fiddle and Kalimbas seem to be the basis, but then you hear the subtle electronic treatments sprinkled here or Theremin there and are reminded this is New Music. The King Crimson cover comes as a surprise. These are meanderings, not merry melodies. On the verge of yodeling, but more like moaning low imitation country panderings, like Ween’s 12 Country Classics, auditioned by Rod Serling.” _ DJ Steven, Mental Notes

.) Miracle _ The Strife Of Love In A Dream (Relapse) … “Third release from UK/US duo Miracle. The liners say this was built between 2013-2017. It’s well put together and is thickly layered as electronic music should be.” _ Steven, Mental Notes radio show (Fridays, 7-9pm)

.) Third Coast Ensemble _ Wrecks (RogueArt) … “Recorded in France on a few dates in 2015, the big band/orchestral vibe here seems to have some sonic and textural similarities to one of Rob Mazurek’s previous projects, Exploding Star Orchestra. There are tight, almost academic orchestrations, a la George Russell, but also grittier moods along the lines of Sun Ra Arkestra or ICP Orchestra. The electronics throughout maintain one foot in outer space at all times. Not only that, but there is some English and/or French spoken word bits on several tracks … here is another installment in the ever unfurling continuum of Rob Mazurek-related excellence.” _ DJ Jonathan (Tenor To Tabla, Wednesdays, 8-10pm)

.) The Dean Ween Group _ rock2 (Schnitzel) … “Dean Ween is the guitarist for Ween and shows off his playing on an incredibly diverse, entertaining set of songs. You’ll hear rock, psychedelic, country rock, and jazz fusion-y tunes.” _ Matt the Free Range DJ

.) Vitalic _ Voyager (Citizen) … “Vitalic is the alter-ego of French musician Pascal Arbez-Nicolas. Voyager is the 5th release by Vitalic, and Arbez-Nicolas considers this to be his most “disco” record to date. Influenced by the late 70s this album blurrs the boundaries between Italo-Disco, techno, house and rock, with its Georgio Moroder keyboard style and Michael Jarre euro rhythms. _ DJ Lady D

.) Guided By Voices _ Space Gun (GBV Inc.) May 11 … “Robert Pollard’s 102nd! release and one of GBV’s finest. A few years ago, one writer suggested that with Kevin March on drums, Pollard had found his Keith Moon. With this in mind, Doug Gillard is his Pete Townshend, taking GBV places musically that they frankly couldn’t get to with their “classic lineup.” This record sounds like they took their time. It is fully formed and catchy as hell.” _ Matt the Free Range DJ (Let There Be Rock, Tuesday nights at midnight to 2am Wednesday)

ASHEVILLE CONCERT NOTE: an evening with Guided By Voices _ May 11 @ The Grey Eagle
