Top 10 Play Commentary, week of May 20-26, 2018; WSFM-LP, 103.3 FM, Asheville FM, North Carolina

1.) Parquet Courts _ Wide Awake! (Rough Trade) … fast play first-week on our shelf for New York City band, Asheville FM deejays energized by Parquet’s soul & funk-infused indie rock punk, like early 1980s provocateurs Big Boys and the Minutemen, both riff-wise and in vocal delivery of the socio & politically-aware lyrics … Parquet Courts coming down fast to Asheville: June 5 (next Tuesday) @ Orange Peel w/Goat Girl (from London, England).

2.) Mary Lattimore _ Hundreds of Days (Ghostly International) … DJ Joey Books wrote: “On this new collection, Lattimore takes her harp beyond a solo instrument, blending it with electric guitar, piano, theremin, synthesizer and her voice to create ambient music compositions that are complex and meditative, at times using a looping pedal to expand them into atmospheric levels.” … Mary Lattimore came down fast on Asheville: she played the Mothlight, May 25.

3.) 30) 1) 12) 2) 1) Nest Egg _ Nothingness is Not a Curse (Fuzz Club) … more local airplay leading to May 26 album release Mothlight show where Nest Egg’s hot performance and smoke machine set off venue’s fire alarm sirens and flashing lights which only added to the visual stage effects of Nest Egg which played through until Fire Dept. arrived.

4.) Wussy _ What Heaven is Like (Damnably) … DJ Steven Howard said: “Seventh full-length from earnest Cincinnati, Ohio, 5-piece. First real intro to Wussy was their Attica LP (2014) which had their homage to The Who’s “Baba O’Reilly”; Wussy’s song “Teenage Wasteland” cut me to the core. Chuck Cleaver (ex-Ass Ponys) & Lisa Walker formed Wussy in 2001, share most writing and vox, often in duets or call & response. The writing has hallmarks of people who’ve experienced their subject matter, for good or bad. You’ll hear fuzzed-out noise guitars coupled with peddle steel, minimal orchestrations. This gang will grown on you, hope to see them live.”

5.) Courtney Barnett _ Tell Me How You Really Feel (mom+pop) … singer-songwriter guitarist Courtney Barnett follows up her 2015 breakthrough, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit, with album #2, a solid batch of likable tunes about personal hurt, dealing, and healing, all sung in Barnett’s distinctive Australian accent, stronger on some than others.

6.) Invisible System _ Bamako Sessions (Riverboat) … DJ Gypsy wrote: “On this album, Dan Harper went to Mali and jammed with Malian musicians in a rented house treated with mattresses for acoustic control. Dan plays bass guitar, synthesizer and drums on this recording. He is joined by Banjougou Koyaté on guitar, djun djun, and djembe; Sidi Touré on guitar and calabash; Ousmane Dagnon on ngoni and tamamin; kora players Seyba Kouyaté and Cherif Soumano; Djémory Kouyaté on ballafon, drummer Morrissamda Diabaté; guitarists Kalifa Koné and Dou. Together they have created a recording that stays close to the Malian tradition yet remains fresh and modern _ think Niafunke (Ali Farke Touré) with a whole band.”

7.) Ryley Walker _ Deafman Glance (Dead Oceans) … DJ Joey Books said: “Ryley Walker is back with a new ensemble and more jazz/folk fusion-oriented songs. A good collection from an outstanding singer/songwriter.”

8.) 16) 5) 3) A Place to Bury Strangers _ Pinned (Dead Oceans) … additional airplay ramping up to AP2BStrangers’ tremendous May 27 Mothlight show past Sunday, noisy but hook-filled, also big on the smoke’n’strobes … show ended intimately with bassist Dion Lunadon iconically playing bass, towering amongst the into-it floor audience.

9.) Peach Kelli Pop _ Gentle Leader (Mint) … hot on the heels of their Which Witch EP, Allie Hanlon and her L.A.-based Peach Kelli Pop band are back with their first full-length album in 3 years, Gentle Leader, whose 10 songs also whip past pretty quickly without losing their melodies … ASHEVILLE CONCERT NOTE: Peach Kelli Pop plays June 7 (a Thursday) @ The Mothlight w/Kitty Tsunami

10.) The Zealots _ Jawbone (Molehill Mountain) … DJ Joey Books reviewed: “The Zealots, an indie Americana rock band based in Asheville, are led by singer-songwriter George Terry. Rounding out the group are bassist Aaron Price, drummer Caleb Beissert, and a number of guest players on this collection of high-energy power-pop and hard rockin’ tunes.” … The Zealots recently had a video-shoot gig at Fleetwood’s on a bill w/Dexter Romweber, The Dirty Dutch Trio.

=====

for his birthday, jazz innovator Miles Dewey Davis III (May 26, 1926 – September 28, 1991) was honored By All Means Necessary (Sat. 10pm-midnight) and Something Else (Sat. 10am-noon), which you can hear in archive until next episode
