Last month, our very own DJSmittymon and his wife MK were on the island of Anguilla for the Moonsplash Reggae Beach Festival. And they discovered that Asheville FM had a kind of sister station on the island – KOOL FM 103.3!
Here’s what DJSmittymon had to say:
"It took a little bit to find the station, as we were navigating using the radio antennas as our point of reference since secondary road signs do not exist. The island folks were so kind and happy to help guide us. The station sign reads ‘Kool Sounds, Kool People, Kool Vibes,’ which truly matches the feeling of the island. We met up with DJ Lee1, known as Brother Lee to his listeners and one of the founding members.
"As he gave us a tour of the studio, we shared a laugh when we noticed some of their chairs looked much like our hand-me-down units in Asheville (the station owner kept them for sentimental reasons). He told us that the station started with a small transmitter and has expanded into a commercial station serving the people of Anguilla. We met several other morning show folks just before they went on air. We could tell they shared our passion for community radio and the common understanding that, as DJLee1 said, ‘music is love.’"
Be sure to check out DJSmittymon on Tuesdays at 11 am.
