We have a dedicated team of volunteers pumping out reviews of all the new music we receive. It’s not just a cool service they provide; they’re also verifying the releases are appropriate for our station and checking for any possible FCC issues.
Our music director, DJ Airon – who reviews a ton of stuff himself – has pulled together some recent reviews of local bands for you to check out. (Reviews have been edited slightly for public consumption.)
The Power, “The Power” 7-song EP (self-released)
The Power are an Asheville melodic trad rock’n’roll garage trio that formed in early 2016 from the ashes of The Blots, with guitarists-vocalists-
UPCOMING CONCERT ALERT: The Power EP release show will be June 8 at Sly Grog Lounge with Thee Sidewalk Surfers, Reese McHenry & The Fox
Polly Panic, “Losing Form” (self-released)
Polly Panic (named after the juvenile fiction character) has been the musical vehicle of Asheville cello player singer-songwriter Jenette Mackie for nearly a decade now, long before she became a member of venerable Rasputina in recent years. Polly Panic mines similar cello-driven, chamber-rock territory with lyrics on a heavier emotional trip. “Losing Form” is Polly Panic’s third album, and its songs range from morose low-key ballads to distorted-cello grungers with varying layers between those two ends. Intriguing listening. [Reviewed by DJ Airon]
The Core, “The Core” (self-released)
Self-described as “Modern acoustic jazz with a foot in the past and an eye on the future,” this is a wonderful album from very talented local artists. The Core have appeared around the area, either all five at White Horse/Black Mountain or smaller iterations at Jargon restaurant’s late night jazz offering. Tracks were recorded at Echo Mountain Studios. Great stuff. I enjoyed every track! [Reviewed by DJ Joey Books]
Nest Egg, “Nothingness Is Not a Curse” (Fuzz Club Records)
Nest Egg, an Asheville psychedelic, kraut rock-influenced band (since 2011), have hatched an excellent followup to 2015’s “Respectable” LP. Nest Egg’s “Nothing Is Not A Curse” is six songs of transcendental-riff travels, pulsed by motorik drumbeats, hooky bass-lines, economic effective guitar-slicing, atmospheric keys, with low-key vocals underneath. The result is absorbing, provocative, catchy. [Reviewed by DJ Airon]
UPCOMING CONCERT ALERT: Nest Egg’s album release show May 26 at The Mothlight with Ex Gold (Knoxville, Tennessee), Smoke Bellow (Baltimore, Maryland)
The Zealots, “Jawbone” (George Terry McDonald)
The Zealots, an indie Americana rock band based in Asheville, are led by singer-songwriter George Terry. Rounding out the group are bassist Aaron Price, drummer Caleb Beissert, and a number of guest players on this collection of high-energy power-pop and hard rockin’ tunes. [Reviewed by DJ Joey Books]
